Finished compost looks rich, dark and clumpy and has that wonderful smell of good soil. The great thing about composting is without much preparation or expense you can try composting to see how you like it.
The Compost Bin
The first thing you are going to need is something to house your compost in. This is your compost bin. It does not have to be expensive, some chicken wire will do you fine. The key for a proper bin is one that creates the correct amount of weight and mass to start decomposition. A bin needs to be three feet in diameter and three feet high to start the decomposition process.
Compost Bin Ingredients
A good compost bin should be a mixture of brown and green materials.
Brown ingredients include materials that have started to dry out, like straw, shredded leaves, or even dead plants. Brown ingredients should be 3 to 1, green ingredients.
Green ingredients are fresher not dried out materials but are things like grass clippings, banana peels, tea bags, coffee grounds are good to use just keep them in the filter, it will break down too and throw in a few egg shells.
Avoid composting animal products like meat and dairy because they can attract scavengers.
The decomposition process is a organic process that occurs in the compost pile that decays and breaks down the materials. Decomposition happens only under the right conditions so your compost pile needs air, water, and heat.
Air circulation is needed in your compost pile. It provides oxygen to the pile and keeps bacteria growing and decaying the material. Try to turn your pile about once every week. Turning your compost pile will also help to keep odors down.
Water is not needed often. You only want your compost pile moist, not wet.
Heat is what breaks down the materials. This happens in the middle of the pile naturally. You don’t have to worry about it, just take care of the circulation and moisture and heat will do it’s thing.
Remember making your own compost is the best way to improve your garden and its fun!
